East Side of Steinborn October 30, 2005

This scene shows the Knoll under construction in Fall, 2005. The pond in front of the knoll has very little water since being drained in the summer. Abundant vegetation will provide food for waterfowl when the pond refills. The large dead trees to the west of the pond often provide perches for Osprey, Bald Eagles, Red-Tailed Hawks, Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Double-Crested Cormorants, Belted Kingfishers, Green Heron, and occasionally Canada Geese. Another empty pond lies to the Northwest of these trees, and then several areas where the Friends of the Refuge have planted young trees, seen in plastic tubes that protect them from animals.
