Tualatin River NWR

The Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge formally opened to the public on June 3, 2006. The refuge is an "urban refuge" of reclaimed farmland alongside the Tualatin River surrounded by the growing Portland suburbs of King City, Hillsboro, Sherwood, Tigard and Tualatin.

For the year and a half prior to the opening, I worked with the refuge's Friends group and the Fish and Wildlife Service to photograph wildlife and activities at the refuge. My work resulted in several thousand photos for the refuge's use. Many of the photos are displayed in the TRNWR section of this web site. Some have been used in brochures, flyers, forms, newsletters, newspaper articles, posters, and other publications. The American Bittern photo made famous on the "Open Your Eyes to Wildlife" grand-opening poster even appeared on the sides of Portland Metro buses!

Currently, my photos can be found on all the informational kiosks at the refuge and the refuge brochure and wildlife list. Occasionally, my photos will also be seen in Friends of the Refuge or Audubon of Portland birding classes presented by Doug Robberson, such as the "Waterfowl of the Willamette Valley" class during National Wildlife Refuge Week. And a traveling display of my refuge photos and information about the refuge can be occasionally found in various retail establishments near the refuge.
